Leeds United vs Liverpool (1-1): Match Summary and Analysis

Team News

[coach 1533119] made two changes to the side that won against league leaders, [team 9]. [player 29478] came in for the suspended [player 3344], and Harrison replaced the in-form [player 160258].

As for the away side, it was two changes as well. [player 1494396] had a hamstring issue, so [player 96099] was pushed back into the defence. Thiago came into the midfield with [player 1365] shifting in the middle of the three with [player 197] on the other side.

First-Half

With two high-intensity [league 8] sides facing off, the game started with both sides keen to assert their authority. [team 8] got the better of Leeds as they were looking the more threatening out of the two. Inside the first five minutes, [player 432881] came up with a fine save as he tipped over [player 31857]’s brilliant effort from 25-yards-out.

Later, the reds had another opening when [player 159917] cut onto his right foot but was denied by an excellent block from Llorente. Overall, it was a quiet first 20 minutes with both sides cancelling each other out.

Finally, the home side created something after [player 3354]’s excellent interception, which allowed him to play [player 1175] with one-vs-one against Alisson. However, the striker’s poor first touch allowed [coach 455353]’s men the chance to clear it away.

[team 71] were struggling to cope up with Liverpool’s dynamic play. [player 1461] and Jota’s false nine movements were confusing Leeds’s backline. Liverpool’s penetration was finally rewarded as the reds took the lead after a well-worked goal. Jota picked up the ball with his back to goal and played a lovely ball into [player 1917]’s path. The right-back then squared the ball brilliantly to [player 1389], who struck it into the net.

The whites could not play through Liverpool’s press, and the reds looked more likely to score the second. However, Leeds did well to see out the first half without conceding again. A lot had to change in the second half in terms of their final third play, which so far was poor.

Second-Half

Once again, Liverpool got on the front foot and looked dangerous. Meslier made another impressive stop to deny Firmino in the opening stages of the second half. Leeds did respond as they started to ping Liverpool backwards in the wider areas. [player 197870]’s and [player 3158]’s crosses from sides were effective. They could have easily brought Leeds back, but the attacking bodies did not convert the crosses.

As the game grew, Leeds started to penetrate Liverpool and targetted Trent as teams playing against Liverpool usually do. The young full-back was then involved in a slightly controversial incident when the ball struck his arm inside the Liverpool box. VAR checked, and they stuck with the on-field referee’s decision. Trent’s arm was in a natural position as per the law, and as a result, a penalty wasn’t given.

A corner was again not converted as [player 6563] missed the target at the back post. Leeds were getting closer, and Liverpool were struggling to create something of their own. A nice move between [player 4527] and [player 262274] resulted in a shot from the winger, which was saved well by Alisson.

Liverpool needed changes to get back on the front foot while Leeds needed fresher legs to create more. [player 2823510] came in for Costa for Leeds while [player 4125] was introduced in place of Mane.

With over ten minutes left, Bamford’s control was great after Ayling’s chipped pass. However, the striker’s effort struck the post, and somehow Liverpool were still leading. [player 129820]’s work was instrumental in keeping Liverpool ahead as the Brazilian was again called into action. Roberts had another chance, but again it was Alisson’s work that denied Leeds the equaliser.

Finally, Leeds United hard work paid off as with three minutes remaining, [player 186595] scored from a corner and gave Leeds a well-deserved equaliser. Harrison’s lovely delivery was headed home by the defender as frustration in the Liverpool camp grew.

There was a huge chance for Liverpool to score their second in stoppage time, but Meslier did enough to deny the champions the three points.

Fixture Details: [fixture 16943121]

The reds had the chance to get into the top four with a win at Ellan Road but a late equaliser took two points away.
